5 Tips on How to Enjoy Hockey


Julie Whelan Photography is all about having fun and enjoying the great sport we have built our business around. While photographing the Streetsville Christmas Classic Tournament in December, we noticed that the tournament director, John Culleton, and the staff of the Streetsville Hockey League feel the same way.

It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement and forget that the players on the ice are just kids. When I look back on my days of youth hockey, I have fond memories of my teammates, the places we travelled (especially the hotels!) and having fun out on the ice. I can’t remember, however, the bad call made by the ref or how many times my team won or lost. I think it’s important to focus on the positive aspects that being on a team can provide for a child.

I believe that the SHL is doing the right thing by reminding us all what really matters. At the tournament, the first thing to be seen upon entering the Vic Johnston Community Centre was this sign:

Positivity and having fun are at the core of every member of the Streetsville Hockey League. After attending and photographing countless youth hockey tournaments, we have seen a number of different attitudes on the game and feel if everybody in the hockey community shared these values, we would all be able to enjoy the game for what it is: a game.
